Cultural Meeting: Márcia Pazin

The first Cultural Meeting of the year was introduced by Márcia Pazin, Documentation and Projects Manager at the Fundação Patrimônio Histórico da Energia e Saneamento, and the subject was 'Permanent Documentation in Corporate Memory Centers'. Márcia explains how important it is, and participants voice their opinions. Viviane Oliveira: The Fundação Bunge, through the agency of the Centro de Memória Bunge, promoted the first 2010 Cultural Meeting, titled ‘Permanent Documentation in Corporate Memory Centers’; the meeting dealt with the compilation of items for Memory Centers. Márcia Pazin, the specialist in charge the course, talks about the importance of preserving corporate memory. Márcia Pazin: When you lose your personal memory, a condition called amnesia, you lose your identity. Remembrance is a part of our being human that allows people to learn from past mistakes and set the wheels in motion. So, if there are things in your past that help you to understand your present aims and create something for the future, why not make use of them? In Brazil people are realizing that recalling the past is not a silly thing, that it is not only the future that matters. You look back and find a series of lessons you have to learn to create new things, to increase your knowledge. We have to promote this among Brazilians, and the Corporate Memory Center has been contributing a lot to this. They are introducing into people’s working routine a concept to which they are not used, which is to look back and find the past may be interesting, realize that not all new things are invariably good, that you find many ideas in the past. Not every new thing is better than old things: the past holds lessons for us. VO: As well as sharing knowledge and promoting integration among participants, the Meetings also offer a contribution for people’s everyday life. Suzana Mara de Carvalho: A good background is essential, and I’m really being empowered by the courses I’m taking. Now I see the subject from different perspectives, and this is very important. Since I am a communication professional, my perspective is centered on communication; I’m interested in these talks with historians and people from other areas because they complement my views as a communicator. VO: You said you are creating a Memory Center. In what ways do you think this Meeting will help you? Sebastiana Cordeiro: It will give me a better understanding of the course to be taken. We have been doing things we believe to be right, but our intention is precisely this: find out whether we have taken the right course, and what can be improved or even totally reformulated in order to accomplish better results. VO: Márcia gives some tips to companies considering the creation of a Corporate Memory Center. MP: The first thing to consider when creating a Center is an investigation on the items you have, what documents you have, whether there is a leading idea, the reasons people may have to be involved in the project. Decennial anniversaries of the corporation are generally successful. Projects for recognizing a professional’s worth using the company’s history as the basis for this appreciation are also very helpful. A second tip is to have specialized professionals working with strategic areas within the company, areas that are likely to have interesting documents; we have to think about this: what is it that is going to awake the interest of the company in organizing the items, and work on it. And after that you have to raise the awareness of directors and staff, commit them to the idea of creating a Memory Center. You have to make them realize it is important for the company; they have to understand this, many people don’t know how it works.
